The Greatest Digimon Adventure Continues!

by Shout! Factory (Paid Article) (Paid Advertisement),

The new epic adventure for the original DigiDestined heroes continues with Digimon Adventure tri.: Determination, released for the first time on Blu-ray and DVD! It is the successor to Digimon Adventure tri.: Reunion (already available), and the second of six new Digimon feature-length films which bring back many of the English-language voice-actors from the original Digimon TV series. This edition offers the English-language version for the first time, as well as the Japanese version with subtitles.

In Determination, the DigiDestined teens have reunited with their soulmate Digimons from the Digital World. However, they still don't know why Tokyo is being bombarded with malign infected monsters. After their recent battles, all our heroes need a break, so they relax at an onsen (hot spring). Perhaps unwisely, the childlike Digimons are allowed to come along and experience this integral part of Japanese culture. And for viewers who've seen a lot of anime about onsen hijinks, they don't play out quite as you'd expect here...

There's a new DigiDestined in the team now - the shy girl Meiko Mochizuki, accompanied by her lethally cute feline Digimon Meicoomon. Meiko's welcomed by the other youngsters, and forms an odd couple relationship with the aggressively bubbly Mimi Tachikawa. There are also glimpses of more familiar faces from the DigiDestined's past adventures, both friend and foe...

But despite the general fun, with a school festival coming up for which Mimi has big ideas, all is not well for the DigiDestined. One of the team members, Joe Kido, is weirdly reluctant to associate with his former friends, even when more infected monsters start appearing. Tensions in the team spread, with even the most confident DigiDestined having to question themselves. Eventually the Digimon will face another titanic adversary, but the battle will have a shocking sting in the tail...

Digimon Adventure tri.: Reunion continues the adventures of the heroic DigiDestined youngsters - Tai, Matt, Sora, Izzy, Mimi, Joe, T.K., and Hikari - and the Digimons - Agumon, Gabumon, Piyomon, Gomamon, Palmon, Patamon, Tentomon and Tailmon. The DigiDestined were first introduced in the original Digimon TV series as kids; in Digimon Adventure tri, they've grown up into high-schoolers, redesigned by Atsuya Uki.

Some of the original Digimon English-language voice-actors have returned for Digimon Adventure tri: Joshua Seth as Taichi, Collen O'Shaghnessey as Sora, Mona Marshall as Izzy and Philece Sampler as Mimi. The new dub voices include Vic Mignogna, famed as Edward Elric from Fullmetal Alchemist, as Taichi's friend (and sometimes rival), Matt.

The newest DigiDestined recruit is Meiko Mochizuki, the nervous girl in glasses whom Mimi takes under her wing. Meiko is voiced in Japanese by Miho Arakawa, who you may know from a couple of series by Kunihiko Ikuhara; she was the heroine Hitomi in Mawaru Penguindrum and Ginko in Yurikuma Arashi. Meiko's English voice is provided by veteran Cristina Valenzuela, who you may know for her roles in magic girl franchises: she was Sailor Mars in Sailor Moon (the Viz Media dub) and Homura in Puella Magi Madoka Magica.

As we mentioned above, Meiko's loyal Digimon is the feline Meicoomon, a character who may answer one of the burning questions of anime fandom: is it possible for something to be too cute? Meicoomon is voiced in English by Kate Higgins, who's Sakura in the Naruto franchise; she also co-starred with Cristina Vanzuela in the Viz Media dub of Sailor Moon, as Sailor Mercury.

Digimon Adventure tri.: Determimation is available this week on Blu-ray/DVD/Digital Download in English with the original English voice cast, plus Japanese audio with English sub-titles and new bonus features.
