There actually exists side-stories of what you're talking about. In Volume SIII of the LN (the last volume that came out in 2012, a collection of side-stories), there are 3 prequel stories and 2 sequel stories. One of those sequels, Future, focuses on the characters who remained on Earth, so Kazumi, Margery and Yuuji's classmates & parents. The other, Hope, focuses on the characters who are in Xanadu, so the Flame Hazes and Denizens, including ofc Shana, Yuuji, Wilhelmina, etc.

This newly announced story is called Amphitheater (I think). I have no clue what they can add to the Shana franchise here, as we already have the main story done, prequels, sequels and side-stories. Then again, some events in the Hope side-story could bring about additional content and situations mainly focused on Yuuji, but we'll have to see.

In any case, I'm very happy. Shakugan no Shana is among my favourite anime ever. Sadly, I can't read Japanese, so I won't be able to access whatever new they release, but I'm happy nonetheless.

So much for Yuuji's plan. It's back to Earth we go. Always hated that twist, and this new story just proves it was all for naught.

Huh? The "come to Earth" thing is the description of the entire series, not the new story. As GoldenPincers mentions, there have already been post-series stories set in both the other world and on Earth... it's a pretty permanent development.

I guess Rie Kugimiya better be ready for another Shana show.

wait... what?

...huh

A LOT of stuff's happened in the time I've been away.

the last thing I recall was watching season 2 and thinking that the show's no longer as interesting as I though it was.

Did season 3 branch off from the light novels or anything, hell are the novels even licensed? i have a few volumes in my library but they all sorta disappeared after a while, guess the publisher went bankrupt or something and no one wanted to pick it up?

Season 3 is so different in tone that it might as well be a different series. To give you an idea of how different, the first episode begins with Shana leading a massive army against the forces of Bal Masque - and the revelation that spoiler[Yuuji] has become Bal Masque's leader.

On the contrary: the anime is very faithful to the light novels, to the point where you're going to want to fire up the Shana wiki, as characters from unadapted side-stories receive significant screen time during the second half of the third season (and the show isn't always that great about summarizing their backstories).

Viz brought over the first two novels (out of twenty-six), but apparently they didn't sell well enough.

Any info on what the story is about? Is it a full volume or just a chapter?
I'd really love an anime remake, with proper pacing, staying faithful to the novels. That first cour of the second season that was half-anime original half-game adaptation, would've worked just fine to adapt things well instead. It's a great shame that such an influential series with a plot structure, richness and creativity that's rarely seen in Japanese works... doesn't have a proper adaptation for people to judge it by.

No, no. Yuuji doesn't go back to Earth, he's still in Xanadu alongside Shana and everyone else. I just said that ONE of the sequel side-stories focuses on whoever is left on Earth after the end of War (Margery, Kazumi, and the other human characters).

As BodaciousSpacePirate said, S3 is very different from S1 and S2. It's still the same show and characters, of course, but there's a big genre shift. It switches from Action/Romance with RomCom elements, to full-on War/Drama/Romance with a heavy moral grey lining alongside it.
If anything, I'm surprised that you didn't start S3, after the teasing cliffhanger at the end of S2.

Not yet. For now, it's just an announcement with only the title revealed.

I have to agree. I freaking love Shakugan no Shana, but due to several aspects (S1 going original due to the anime staff not thinking it would sell much and deciding a sort-of conclusion; S2's 1st half being original as the staff didn't expect the series to sell and influence as much as it did and deciding to make a 2nd season, but with S1's original ending they had to continue with original until they could properly go back into adaptation; the LN having only 2 Volumes translated), it's not something you can only judge by the anime alone. I spent hours on the Shana Wiki, and holy hell there are SO many things that are LN-only. Shana's LN got licensed at a time where nobody knew what LNs were, so it didn't sell. With today's ever-growing popularity of them, I wish Shana's LN would get a re-license. Such an influencial series deserves it.

Yep. The problem is that it was actually the FIRST TWO seasons that weren't super faithful to the novels, and included a fair amount of anime original material and cut a lot of stuff out. And the third season didn't at all properly account for that. My "favorite" moment of all was the moment when a character says "We even sent Sale and Chiara" and we see these two characters, and everything is framed like it's important and we should know who they are.

But we've literally never heard of or seen them before. At all. But, as it turns out, in the light novels, an ENTIRE VOLUME was dedicated to them, but this was cut out of the first two seasons. And then suddenly season 3 throws them into the mix and just expects us to understand and care about them.

Which is a real shame, as while I love aspects of the anime, the issues with the adaption really hold it back, and I'd love to read the source material. I'm still hoping for an anime reboot somehow.

So I've read on a FB Chinese page using rough translation from google translator and on some other SnS FB pagws that maybe this announcement is for not just an one-off chapter but a whole new series. And from the translation they said that announcement talks about the new world aka Xanadu. Look at the following Chinese post and its rough translation:

The 15th anniversary of Charlotte's novel will be published in the September 15 " Shock Magazine Magazine
To be on sale at 8/9, it is speculated that this information map is drawn from it.
And in the intelligence map, there was a reference to " yan " and " back to the world
It might be possible to speculate on the story of summer and life in the new world.
In addition, the new title is "Anfishatā" in Chinese.
It's a " Arena... that's a headline.
If you want to save a new one, don't forget to buy this magazine!

Interesting..
I haven't dove into the LN other then the 2 that were released by VIZ. It does explain much considering the 3rd season had some pretty major disconnects after the 2nd.

One of the things I really liked about this series was the soundtracks... especially the OP and ED themes.. they were all really good.

considering that people werent fans of the ending of the last shana anime series because it wasnt completely faithful towards the LN or the manga, its highly likely rie wont be touching shana ever again.
