I used to have a small one that could fit on a desk. Also had a mini zen garden as well. I often used them to relax or while reading in the case of the shishi-odoshi. I definitely did not drink from mine though. Too much cat hair.

hi,

I think you got the "how it works" wrong, or worded it mistakably.

When the bamboo tube is full, it tips over, does not hit a rock, just goes *splash*,
It is when the empty tube falls back into "starting position", and the end of it hitting a rock that it goes *plonk*.

Empty tubes always sound more/ louder than filled ones.

-----------
edit: OK, forum rules tell me I must state "English is not my native language" in my first post.
So, there.

Huh, I'd always assumed it was a simple water clock.

Yup. And Justin further gets is wrong by stating that it tips over "because it gets heavy". No, it tips over because it becomes unbalanced (because the center of gravity (which is offset because the tube is tilted in it's rest position) rises above the pivot point). /nitpick

Well, lets see, we definitely have a problem with deer in the backyard. The blasted deer go over a three foot high fence like it wasn't there. We also have a stream running just behind the back yard and a small plot of bamboo about a hundred yards upstream.

Unfortunately, the bamboo tops out at about an inch in diameter, I doubt it would make the necessary sound. And of course the water in the stream is about twenty feet below the level of the back yard. Oh well, it was a nice idea.

I just want to say that "The Thing That Goes Doink" is my favorite TVtrope page ever, just because of the name.

I didn't know you're supposed to drink from them. I always thought the water would empty down into a pond and/or get recycled by a pump (at least the modern ones). I always saw it as something like a fountain accessory.

It wouldn't quite be a Japan-set anime without having at least 1 of these appearing in it.

I'e got one in my garden to scare off the deer. I'm sure they are easy to find online for sale, but they are even easier to make from scratch, assuming you've got any bamboo lying around.

Worked real well, too! For about a week. Then the deer figured out that the thing that goes doink wasn't any kind of threat, and they were back to munching the garden again without a care in the world. Oh well, it still looks and sounds nice.
