Ah, The Majin Buu arc... Probably the most divisive part of the original before-Super Dragon Ball. I quite like it even if I agree that it's not as strong as the Piccolo/Saiyan/Freeza/Cell arcs and is quite messy in places in a way the series hasn't been since it's very early days.

But then it is Toriyama going to back to roots as a gag artist and wanting to end the series on his terms. And even though he kept changing his mind on who should be the one to defeat Buu, I personally think he made the right choice in the end. (But more on that if or when that part get reviewed here by Sam.) It's also the funniest saga in terms of it's gags moreso then early Dragon Ball and Vegeta's character arc that is completed here is still among the best villain to anti-hero to hero conversion in the genre.

And it's probably the arc best enhanced by the anime as however much his enthusiasm was, Toriyama's art in the manga was starting to really decline around here while Toei really brought their animation A game and for the most part, made the correct choices in expanding it. (See Goku vs Majin Vegeta)

All that being said, I do think the Kai version really should have been shorter then 69 episodes. (More like 50 at most) and that you'd be better off just watching the original Z version if you want to watch it subbed. (Dubbed is different story though the original Z's dub there was actually pretty good the first time around.) And yes, the Sumitomo's score is dreadful. I'd had rather they had just rehashed Kikuchi's again or even brought back Bruce Faulconer.

I've been curious about revisiting the buu saga for a while. In retrospect I kind of hate that Gohan went from the successor to Goku and defender of the world at the end of the Cell arc to being a joke and sidelined for more Goku, but I remember the stuff with super buu and Vegeto being amazing to my 10 year old self.

I do hate that they crop the picture though. I don't want 1/3 of the animation to be chopped off just to make it fit the tv. I don't think that there is a complete uncropped release of DBZ on bluray in either Kai or standard now that I think about it; kinda wish that would happen now that the restoration project was cancelled a while ago.

This has been an issue with Blu ray from the beginning.
A lot of old films have been getting the "stretch the video treatment" or cropped to fit the TV sets.
It doesn't happen as much with the more popular older films on home video (although sometimes the cable broadcasts ARE stretched!).
Try and explain these things to people and you will literally see their eyes roll into the back of their heads! A lot of people can't get handle these concepts (I don't want to call them dumb but honestly a lot of people are not good at understanding even simple technical concepts!) but they still buy the HD sets whether they really need them or not without understanding crap about the technology!
This is how video and electronics companies can get away with pushing new product -- the sheer ignorance of the audience on basic film/video standards.
It wasn't that long ago most of us had CRT tubes, 4:3 picture format. Widescreen for home viewing was only beginning to be introduced in the 1990s (on both home video and wider angle/rectangular TV sets) and it was only with DVD that the concept of anamorphic video to fit widetubes (and later Plasma and LCD 16:9 sets) was introduced. They were doing pan-and-scan releases of movies well into the DVD era!
And IF you want to keep that 4:3 image (if you're one of the people who kept their DVDs instead of trading or giving them away) on your HD set, you STILL have to go into your Blu ray player's settings and make sure the right video outputs are selected or the player WILL stretch the image from 4:3 to 16:9!!!! Blu ray players are basically autoset to stretch according to model. They WILL output at 1080p for EVERY disc unless you adjust the settings yourself.

As far as the original music goes, that's a big, big problem. They could get away with plagiarizing as long as the shows only stayed in Japan but as we've seen with other anime, they definitely dinged/hurt/edited when they were exported out of Japan. If American or European music companies find their COPYRIGHTED music was plagiarized, they'll sue to stop video releases with the plagiarized music. That's a reason why Gunbuster probably isn't available on BD at the moment outside of Japan because some of the music sounds suspiciously like Vangelis music for "Chariots of Fire."
For other series, the music issues have to do with licensing as in "the record companies want too much money for this pop song." That's why, for instance, Zeta Gundam was released on video in the West without the theme song for the series.

Well, the Chariots of Fire thing was an homage. Plagiarism is what they did to Marvin Gaye.
