posted on by Rai Kelly

Netflix's official page for the Final Fantasy XIV Dad of Light (Final Fantasy XIV: Hikari no Ōtōsan) live-action television miniseries revealed that the show will premiere for users in the United States on September 1. The official Twitter account for the miniseries announced in March that the series will premiere on Netflix worldwide this fall.

The Final Fantasy XIV Dad of Light drama series premiered in Japan on April 17 on MBS, and April 19 on TBS. The seven-episode series debuted on Netflix in Japan from April 20 to June 1. The show is available with English subtitles on Netflix in Japan.

Yūdai Chiba (live-action ReLIFE's Ryo Yoake, live-action Ao Haru Ride's Tōma Kikuchi) stars in the series, and Ren Ōsugi (Shin Godzilla's Prime Minister) plays the father. Other cast members include Fumika Baba, Yoshihiko Hakamada, Yoshino Nanjō, Minako Kotobuki, Aoi Yūki, and Mako Ishino.

Teruo Noguchi (Secret Love, Avatar) directed the series, and Kiyoshi Yamamoto (AKB Horror Night Adrenalin no Yoru, Tokyo Toybox films) directed the Eorzea unit. Kōta Fukihara (live-action Yowamushi Pedal series, live-action Tensai Bakabon ~ Kazoku no Kizuna series) wrote the scripts. Glay performed the opening theme song "the other end of the globe," and Silent Siren performed the ending theme song "Akane." meg performed the insert song "Jacaranda no Hana no Yō ni."

The miniseries is inspired by the online Ichigeki Kakusatsu SS Nikki's blog based on real-life experiences. The blog chronicles a father who is over 60, and his son as they play the Final Fantasy XIV game together. The series will follow both men as the game brings them closer together while each of them are also holding onto a secret.

Square Enix released Final Fantasy XIV Online for personal computers in September 2010. After criticism from fans, the company revealed an updated version of the game titled Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn that added a new world and story. Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn launched on Windows PC and PS3 in August 2013, and then on PS4 in April 2014. Square Enix released the first expansion for Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, titled Heavensward, in June 2015.

The company released the second expansion, titled Stormblood, on June 20. Square Enix president Yosuke Matsuda revealed earlier this month that the online game's number of paid subscribers hit a record high in the first quarter of fiscal year 2018, which is running from April 1, 2017 to March 31, 2018. Matsuda said the launch of the Stormblood expansion contributed to the increase in subscribers.
