Shenmue III Director: Trailer Character Models are 'Mostly Temporary'

posted on by Karen Ressler

Shenmue series creator and director Yū Suzuki responded to fan concern over the character models in the trailer for Shenmue III in an interview with Game Spark on Wednesday. According to Suzuki, the models for "Shenhua, Ryo, and the other characters are mostly temporary."

Producer Hideaki Morishita also said that the models were not completed in time for the trailer, and he thought the video was a little premature. He explained that the trailer was put together to follow up the news that Deep Silver will publish the game, as it has been a long time since there have been any updates.

In an interview with Game Watch, Suzuki further explained that the facial expressions were not included in the trailer. The expressions were added a month ago, but have been temporarily removed.

The teaser trailer for the game debuted on Monday. In the video, the characters' faces are mostly static.

The game was originally slated for release in December, but was pushed back to the second half of 2018. It is slated for release on PlayStation 4 and PC.

Suzuki announced the Shenmue III Kickstarter campaign at the PlayStation E3 press conference in June 2015 with an initial goal of US$2 million. The campaign met that goal within nine hours of launching before adding stretch goals for the previous games' cinema shorts, subtitles in five languages (German, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese), rapport and skill tree systems, an expanded Baisha village setting, and five mini games.
