19 AKB48/SKE48 Idols, 1 Dancing Mayor Celebrate Coming-of-Age Day
posted on by Egan Loo
Monday is Coming-of-Age Day, the Japanese national holiday that honors all those who turned 20 and became adults in the past year. No less than 15 members of the all-female idol group AKB48 and four members of the sister group SKE48 celebrated their coming of age on Monday. Atsuko Maeda, Tomomi Itano, Minami Takahashi, and other members of the groups went to Kanda Myōjin, the honorary shrine for the nearby Akihabara (Akiba) district, mark the occasion with a ceremony.
Meanwhile, on the southwestern island of Kyushu, Aso Mayor Yoshioki Satō sang and danced to the tune of AKB48's top-selling song of 2011, "Flying Get," at his city's Coming-of-Age ceremony.
Mayor Satō has made it tradition to sing an AKB48 song — if not with the talent of T.M. Revolution, with at least the same enthusiasm — at the Coming-of-Age ceremony every year.
