Gundam Character Designer Yasuhiko Draws Poster for Japan-Cuba Film Ernesto

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge

Mobile Suit Gundam character designer Yoshikazu Yasuhiko has added his touch to the official poster for the upcoming live-action film Ernesto. The historical drama is a Japan and Cuba co-production starring Joe Odagiri as Japanese-Bolivian Freddy Maemura Hurtado otherwise known as "Ernesto Medico" who fought alongside famed revolutionary Che Guevara (Juan M. Valero). Directed by Junji Sakamoto (Ashita no Joe, Zatoichi: The Last), the film recounts the relationship between the two men on eve of revolution.

Yasuhiko previously drew the image used for the poster over two days after watching the completed film. He previously drew a manga based on the same story as part of Asahi Shimbun's Shūkan Manga Sekai no Ijin series.

Guevara is known in Japan not just for his historical significance but also for visiting Hiroshima in 1959 and offering flowers at the peace memorial. Sakamoto said "Among all Cubans, Guevara was the one who really knew what would happen if a nuclear war broke out better than anyone else at the time of the Cuban Missile Crisis because he learned about the devastation when he visited Hiroshima."

Both Guevara and Maemura Hurtado were executed by the Bolivian government in 1967. Maemura Hurtado's body was lost until 1999 when it was recovered and buried next to Guevara in Santa Clara, Cuba.

Ernesto opens in Japan on October 6. Moviegoers that buy advanced tickets starting on August 5 will also receive the illustrated poster and a clear file as gifts.
