23 Musical Acts Unite in Song for Anime's 100th Anniversary

posted on by Jennifer Sherman

The Association of Japanese Animations' (AJA) Anime Next 100 project announced on Friday that 23 anime song performers and voice actor singers are uniting to perform the "Tsubasa wo Motsu Mono ~Not an angel Just a dreamer~" (Those With Wings: Not an Angel, Just a Dreamer) song to mark the 100th anniversary of the anime industry. The project's planners want the song to be the equivalent of an anime song version of Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie's classic song "We Are the World."

The participating performing artists are i☆Ris, Azumi Inoue, the Wake Up, Girls! singing group, Maaya Uchida, Akira Kushida, GRANRODEO, Isao Sasaki, Hiro Shimono, JAM Project, Konomi Suzuki, Kenichi Suzumura, Ayana Taketatsu, Minori Chihara, TRUE, Toshiyuki Toyonaga, Shōko Nakagawa, Wataru Hatano, Mitsuko Horie, Minami, Ichirō Mizuki, Suzuko Mimori, May'n, and Chihiro Yonekura.

Kōhei Tanaka (One Piece, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure) and Noriyasu Agematsu (Senki Zesshō Symphogear, BanG Dream!) are composing the song. Aki Hata (The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, My-HiME) and Shouko Fujibayashi (JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Assassination Classroom) are writing the lyrics.

The song's CD will retail at 1,500 yen (about US$14) and ship on October 25. The release will include a DVD with the music video for the song.

AJA's Anime Next 100 project is holding the Anime Film Festival Tokyo 2017 event in Tokyo's Shinjuku ward on October 13-15. The Annecy International Animation Film Festival also hosted a special program for the project in June. The event screened short films and full-length films. The short films were from the National Film Center's collection of classic animated works, which are available streaming online with English subtitles this year to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the oldest known Japanese animated short films.
