Director's Nickname From Pacific Rim Set Inspires 'Guillermo del Totoro' Art

posted on by Jennifer Sherman

Guillermo del Toro is known for directing films such as Hellboy, Pan's Labyrinth, and Pacific Rim. However, his social media presence also endears him to fans.

News recently spread on Twitter that young Japanese actor Mana Ashida, who played young Mako in Pacific Rim, could not pronounce del Toro's name. Therefore, she asked to call him "Totoro-san" in reference to Studio Ghibli's film My Neighbor Totoro. At first, the anecdote sounded like nothing more than a rumor or Hollywood legend. However, del Toro confirmed on Twitter last Tuesday that the story is true.

The confirmation delighted Twitter users, inspiring them to post "Guillermo del Totoro" artwork.

The director seems to be embracing his nickname and has retweeted some of the fan responses to the story. Given that the director bears some resemblance to the forest creature, del Toro's alternate persona is likely to continue creating a buzz for some time.

Del Toro is not directing the Pacific Rim: Uprising sequel film due to timing and his work on The Shape of Water, which will open on December 8.
