Pop Culture & Classic Art Collide at Exhibition Featuring Tezuka, Hatsune Miku

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge

Virtual idol Hatsune Miku, the beloved characters of Osamu Tezuka, and San-X mascot Rilakkuma are collaborating with classic Japanese artwork "Bokura ga Nihon o Tsuide Iku -Rinpa, Jakuchū, Anime-" exhibit on the seventh floor of the Takashimaya Kyoto department store in Kyoto. The exhibit opens on September 13 and pairs anime with art inspired by 17th to early 20th century Japanese paintings (Rinpa school) and Edo era painter Itō Jakuchū.

There will be a total of 35 works on display, some previously shown in Toyodate in 2015. The works were created under the supervision of Kyoto Hosomi Museum director and founder Yoshiyuki Hosomi and went on display for the "Rinpa Homage Exhibition" that year.

Artwork includes "Phoenix & Rising Sun over the Surging Sea," "Black Jack & Fuji Ravens," "Princess Knight & the East Pilgrimage from Kyoto," "Hatsune Miku & Jakuchū Chicken," and "Rilakkuma & Eaves' Plums."

Hosomi will hold a talk about the artwork on the exhibit's opening day.

Hatsune Miku and Osamu Tezuka's characters appeared together in a separate cross-over exhibition at the Osamu Tezuka museum in Takarazuka, Hyogo in July.
