Watch Life-Size Unicorn Gundam Statue Field Test Its 'Transformation'

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge

Late last month, the Gundam.info website updated with new details about the 1/1-scale RX-0 Unicorn Gundam in Odaiba, specifically that the giant mecha will be able to transform from "Unicorn mode" to "Destroy mode," luminesce from 50 different areas, and have functional hatches, joints, and changing facial expressions. Staff are currently testing out these features, and one visitor caught it all on video.

The above time-lapsed video shows several hatches opening as the Gundam enters "Destroy Mode."

The second video shows the mecha's lighting tests. Different colored lights are emitted from the joints and other areas. It also lights up from behind.

Another video by Tak Arsenal shows some of the Destroy Mode changes in the day time.

Mechanical designer Hajime Katoki is designing a new decal for the full-scale mecha. The statue measures 19.7 meters high (64.6ft) and weighs 49 tons. Gundam fans can look forward to seeing the mecha in all its glory starting on September 24.
