'Kekkaishi' wins 52nd Shogakukan Manga Award

Manga creator Yellow Tanabe wins for 'Kekkaishi' manga.

Yellow Tanabe has been awarded the Shogakukan Manga Award for his Shonen manga, Kekkaishi. The Shogakukan Manga Award is a yearly prize given to manga artists in various categories, including Shonen-style manga, Shoujo-style manga and Children's manga.

On winning the award, Tanabe commented, "First, to everyone who reads the manga, to everyone who supports Kekkaishi, and to everyone who supports me, I want to express my gratitude. Thank you for allowing me to receive this award. I'm a little stunned that these circumstances, but this blessing provides an excellent feeling, and I am happy. I'm still a novice, and this is only possible thanks to the people who enjoy my manga. Thank you very much!"

Yellow Tanabe won the New Comic Big Prize in 2000 for his work "Yami no Naka" (Middle of Darkness). His next work, "Lost Princess", debuted in 2002. Kekkaishi began publication in Weekly Shonen Sunday in early 2004, and an anime series based on the manga started airing in October 2006.

Viz Media publishes the Kekkaishi manga in North America, with Volume 9 due out May 15th.
