Tekkonkinkreet Submitted for Oscar Animation Nomination

posted on by Egan Loo
11 other works submitted, but only 3 will be formally nominated

Michael Arias and Studio 4°C's Tekkonkinkreet film was among 12 works that have been submitted for nomination in the Best Animated Feature category of the 80th Academy Awards. The Japanese animated film joins the following features for consideration:

  • Alvin and the Chipmunks

  • Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters

  • Bee Movie

  • Beowulf (co-scripted by Princess Mononoke adaptor Neil Gaiman)

  • Meet the Robinsons

  • Persepolis

  • Ratatouille

  • Shrek the Third

  • The Simpsons Movie

  • Surf's Up

  • TMNT (computer-animated by Astro Boy and Gatchaman's IMAGI)

Since less than 16 features have been submitted, only three will be formally nominated for this category. Five films are allowed to be nominees if there are 16 or more submitted works. The qualifying animated features must be 70 minutes or longer and must screen in at least one theater in California's Los Angeles County this year. Hayao Miyazaki's Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle have both been previously nominated, and Spirited Away won the category in the 75th Academy Awards.

The nominations for the 80th Academy Awards will be announced on January 22.
