53rd Shogakukan Manga Award Winners Announced

The Japanese publisher Shogakukan named the winners of the 53rd annual Shogakukan Manga Awards. Noriyuki Murase's Keshikasu-kun won in the children's category (manga aimed at elementary school-age children). Ace of Diamond, by Yūji Terajima, was named best shōnen comic, and Kotomi Aoki's Boku no Hatsukoi o Kimi ni Sasagu, best shōjo. Kuromaru and Takeshi Natsuhara's Kurosagi and Tetsuji Sekiya's Bambino! split the honors for the year's best in the general category. Each winning title will be honored with a prize of 1 million yen (about US$9,422), to be awarded at a March 3 ceremony held in Tokyo's Imperial Hotel. The winners were selected by a seven-person panel of judges, which included P.A.: Private Actress's Michiyo Akaishi, Eagle's Kaiji Kawaguchi, Tsuri Baka Nisshi's Juzo Yamasaki, and Human Crossing's Kenshi Hirokane. Of the four winning titles, only Ace of Diamond was not published by Shogakukan itself.
Shogakukan has been awarding this prize since 1956 (for works published in 1955). Recent winners have included Yumi Hotta and Takeshi Obata's Hikaru no Go (2000), Rumiko Takahashi's Inu-Yasha (2002), Naoki Urasawa's 20th Century Boys (2003) and in 2005, Mine Yoshizaki's Keroro Gunsō.
