Detective Conan stays at #1; Shaolin Girl, Sand Chronicles open in top 5

This year's Detective Conan film, Detective Conan: Full Score of Fear, stayed at #1 at the Japanese box office during the April 26–27 holiday weekend. The film features a previously unreleased song by Zard, the singer of many Detective Conan themes who passed away last May. It added the equivalent of US$2,675,874 on 335 screens (Box Office Mojo) to its US$8,140,078 total to date.

Shaolin Girl, the loose sequel to Stephen Chow's Shaolin Soccer martial arts comedy film, opened on 312 screens at #2 with US$1,841,625. The film stars Kou Shibasaki (Battle Royale, Dororo) as the title character. The 16th Crayon Shin-chan film, Crayon Shin-chan: Chō Arashi wo Yobu Kinpoko no Yūsha, dropped from #2 to #4 in its second weekend. Mitsuru Hongo, the original director of Crayon Shin-chan (as well as of Outlaw Star and Spirit of Wonder), returned to the franchise for the first time since 1996. The film took in $1,472,901 on 317 screens for a US$4,284,415 total haul.

Suna-dokei (Sand Chronicles), the live-action film adaptation of Hinako Ashihara's manga of the same name, opened on 244 screens at #5 with US$1,175,320. Viz Media is publishing the English version of the manga, and the manga has already been adapted in a live-action television series with a different cast than the film's. Kamen Rider: Den-O & Kiva dropped again from #4 to #7. It earned US$647,024 on 136 screens to add to its US$4,470,785 total after three weeks.
