Haruhi's Kyoto Animation to Produce Tonari no 801-chan

2009 TV anime for manga blog about boys-love fan & her otaku boyfriend

Ohzora Publishing Co. has confirmed on its website that Kyoto Animation (The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Clannad, Lucky Star) will be producing the 2009 anime of Ajico Kojima's Tonari no 801-chan comedy manga blog for television. The anime was announced last month on the cover of the third and latest printed volume of the manga.

The manga blog centers on an adult fujoshi (an otaku of boys-love stories) as she juggles her yaoi obsession and her otaku boyfriend. When her boys-love obsession takes over, it manifests itself as a green furry monster (pictured at right). Kojima based the monster on the mascot for a shopping arcade that happens to be named "801." "801" in the manga's title is a pun, since the number "801" can be read as "Ya-o-i" in Japanese.

Ohzora Publishing Co. published the manga in three volumes, and the first two have sold 320,000 copies. There have already been a live-action drama adaptation staring The Prince of Tennis musical's Kōji Seto, as well as a shōjo manga re-imagining in Kodansha's Bessatsu Friend magazine. Kyoto Animation is also slated to work on a new Haruhi Suzumiya anime.
