Macross Frontier Movie Announced

posted on by Egan Loo
Launch of plans announced during anime television series' finale

A theatrical version of the Macross Frontier television anime series was announced during the broadcast of the 25th and final episode, "Anata no Oto," on Friday morning. The series marks the 25th anniversary of Studio Nue's classic science-fiction franchise that combines transforming robotic mecha, love triangles, and interplanetary war. The story revolves around a fighter pilot named Alto Saotome and two singers named Sheryl Nome and Ranka Lee in an alien war that takes place 50 years after the first Macross series. Two manga series are still being serialized, and three Macross Frontier Galaxy Tour concerts (including one in the famous Nippon Budōkan arena where The Beatles and Cheap Trick played) are scheduled for October and November.

Three of the previous Macross series — The Super Dimension Fortress Macross series that launched the franchise, Macross Plus, and Macross 7 — have had theatrical film spinoffs (The Super Dimension Fortress Macross: Do You Remember Love?, Macross Plus Movie Edition, Macross 7 the Movie: The Galaxy's Calling Me!) in Japan. Do You Remember Love? was a remake with all new footage, while Macross Plus Movie Edition was a compilation with some new footage, and Macross 7 the Movie: The Galaxy's Calling Me! was a theatrical short with a new side story. Manga Entertainment compiled the animation from a fourth series, The Super Dimension Fortress Macross II: Lovers, Again, into a feature-length movie that ran in limited release in the United States before being released on home video.

A commercial also aired for Kuroshitsuji, the anime adaptation of Yana Toboso's manga that will take over Macross Frontier's late-night timeslot in the Japanese city of Osaka.

Update: More background details added.
