2 main voices to reprise roles; Layton/Dragon Quest IX creator to pen new story

The game developer Level5 revealed on Wednesday that the animated film version of its Professor Layton mystery games will be titled Professor Layton: The First Movie and will open in Japan in January 2010. In the original games, the archeologist Layton and his trusty assistant Luke solve mysteries in a fantasy setting through a series of puzzles. Castmembers Yō Ōizumi (Brave Story, Howl's Moving Castle) and Maki Horikita (Densha Otoko series, Always: Sunset on Third Street) will reprise their respective roles of Layton and Luke.

Level5 President Akihiro Hino is drafting an entirely new story for TOHO's film version. Hino designed all three Professor Layton games, and he has also directed both the Dragon Quest VIII role-playing game and the upcoming Dragon Quest IX game for Square Enix.

Level5 first announced the existence of the anime project in September during its Level5 Vision 2008 event. The third Professor Layton game, Reiton-kyōju to Saigo no Jikan Ryokō, has begun shipping in Japan on Thursday. There is also a live-action film in the works as well as a Professor Layton manga by Sakura Naoki in Shogakukan's Bessatsu Coro Coro Comic magazine.
