Professor Layton: The First Movie's 2 Teasers Streamed

Mystery game-based Layton Kyōju to Eien no Utahime anime to open in January

The official website for the Professor Layton: The First Movie adaptation of Level5's mystery game franchise has opened with two 30-second teaser trailers. (In the linked page, select either the white "特報(1) (30秒)" or "特報(2) (30秒)" link on the lefthand side for the "Puzzle! 001: The Picture Code" or "Puzzle! 002: Light and Shadow" teaser, respectively.) The website also announced the full title of the film: Layton Kyōju to Eien no Utahime (Professor Layton and the Eternal Songstress). The film will open in Japan in January 2010.

In the original games, the archeologist Layton and his trusty assistant Luke solve mysteries in a fantasy setting through a series of puzzles. Level5 President Akihiro Hino is drafting an entirely new story for TOHO's film version. Hino designed all three Professor Layton games, and he has also directed the Dragon Quest VIII and Dragon Quest IX role-playing games. Masakazu Hashimoto, an episode director on the first Fullmetal Alchemist anime and Scrapped Princess, is directing the animators at Oriental Light and Magic and P.A. Works, off a script by Aya Matsui (Dragon Ball, Eiga de Tōjō! Tamagotchi Doki Doki! Uchū no Maigotchi!?, Marmalade Boy). (P.A. Works also animated the in-game footage of the game series.) Yō Ōizumi and Maki Horikita will reprise their respective roles of Professor Layton and Luke.

Only the first game, Professor Layton and the Curious Village (pictured at right), has been released in North America. There is also a live-action film in the works as well as a Professor Layton manga by Sakura Naoki in Shogakukan's Bessatsu Coro Coro Comic magazine.
