Kaiji Gambling Manga to Resume in Japan in June

posted on by Egan Loo
Live-action film of Nobuyuki Fukumoto's manga to open on October 10

The combined 22nd/23rd issue of Kodansha's Young Magazine has announced today that Nobuyuki Fukumoto will resume his Kaiji gambling manga in the 27th issue, which should ship in June. The announcement was made at the end of a feature article about the live-action Kaiji film, which TOHO will open in Japan on October 10. The 1998 Kodansha Manga Award-winning story centers on a gambler named Kaiji who bets on games ranging from janken (rock-paper-scissors) and human racing to falling pachinko (Japanese pinball) balls and two-player mahjong (Chinese tile game). There have been two sequels since the original 1996-1999 Tobaku Mokushiroku Kaiji manga series, including Tobaku Datenshi-Roku Kaiji which ended last year.

The movie was initially pegged for a summer release during production. Tōya Satō (live-action Gokusen, My Boss - My Hero) is directing, and Tatsuya Fujiwara (Death Note's Light, Battle Royale's Shuya) plays the title role. In the film, actress Yūki Amami (Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea, Socrates in Love) will play the loan shark company president Rinko Endō. The Joost website has been streaming NTV's 2007-2008 television anime version in the United States.
