Noboru Ishiguro Confirms Live-Action Yamato in Development (Update 2)

SMAP's Takuya Kimura to star in remake of space opera classic

Noboru Ishiguro, director of the Space Battleship Yamato television anime series, has confirmed at his Otakon panel on Saturday that a live-action version of Yamato is in development. He also noted that Takuya Kimura, the member of the SMAP entertainment unit known to fans as "KimuTaku," will star in the remake of the space opera classic. Kimura starred as the title character in Howl's Moving Castle, and he also played Memerink in Trinity Blood.

74-year-old producer Yoshinobu Nishizaki is planning to revive the animated side of the franchise this December with the Uchuu Senkan Yamato Fukkatsu-hen anime film — 26 years after the last Yamato film. The biggest theme of the new anime film will be environmental issues and how humans have treated the planet Earth.

Update: More background information added.

Errata: Kimura acted in Howl's Moving Castle, but it was another actor named Taku Kimura who played Memerink in Trinity Blood. Thanks, Luly Nakazato (MiraclePunch).
