Liar Game's Manga-Based Drama Gets Online Spinoff

posted on by Egan Loo
Liar Game Episode 0 series to stream on Fuji TV On Demand service

The Fuji TV On Demand service will begin streaming the Liar Game Episode 0 spinoff series on October 27. The spinoff is based on Liar Game Season 2, the November sequel to the live-action drama television adaptation of Shinobu Kaitani's Liar Game psychological thriller manga. Erika Toda (Death Note films) and Shota Matsuda (Hana Yori Dango television drama) will continue to star as the protagonists Nao Kanzaki and Shinichi Akiyama, respectively, in Season 2. In the story, Kanzaki is an ordinary woman caught in a dangerous 100-million-yen (US$1.1-million) competition known as "Liar Game." Akiyama is the genius con artist who comes to Kanzaki's aid.

Liar Game Episode 0 will take place seven years before the characters meet in the competition. In this spinoff, 15-year-old Mayuko Fukuda (L change the WorLd, 20th Century Boys, Mai Mai Miracle) will play Kanzaki while 22-year-old Yūta Furukawa (The Prince of Tennis musical, Fujoshi Kanojo) will play Akiyama. A total of 12 weekly episodes will be available on Japanese computers and mobile phones. In addition to the Episode 0 spinoff and Season 2, Liar Game: The Final Stage film will open in Japan on February 6.

Over 3 million copies of the original manga have been published since it began serializing in Weekly Young Jump in 2005. The first drama premiered in April of 2007 and garnered an average rating of 11.9% in late night Saturday television in Tokyo's Kanto region. The DVD box version also sold 10,000 sets.
