Japanese Box Office, September 26-27

3rd 20th Century Boys film regains #1 spot, followed by Ballad, Legend of Kamui

The third film in Yukihiko Tsutsumi's three-part live-action adaptation of Naoki Urasawa's 20th Century Boys manga regained the top spot on Kogyo Tsushinsha's Japanese box office chart during the September 26-27 weekend. According to Box Office Mojo, it earned the equivalent of US$1,350,574 on 322 screens. After its fifth weekend, it has a gross-to-date of US$41,635,505.

Takashi Yamazaki's live-action Ballad: Namonaki Koi no Uta period drama film also rose from #4 to #2 in its fourth weekend. It added US$1,107,840 on 331 screens for a total of US$14,681,411. Tsuyoshi Kusanagi of the SMAP entertainment group stars in this historical romance based loosely on the plot of the award-winning Crayon Shin-chan: Arashi wo Yobu Appare! Sengoku Daikassen film.

Yōichi Sai's (Choi Yang-il's) live-action film adaptation of Sanpei Shirato's Kamui Gaiden ninja manga stayed at #3 in its second weekend. Ken'ichi Matsuyama (Death Note movies' L, Detroit Metal City's Sōichi/Krauser II) stars in the title role of a rogue ninja on the run from his own clan. The film garnered US$1,045,816 on 308 screens to add to its total of US$6,330,515.

Duel Masters: Lunatic God Saga and Penguin no Mondai - Shiawase no Aoi Tori de Gopennasai dropped from #1 to #4. In its second weekend, TOHO's double feature took in US$705,888 on 308 screens for a gross-to-date of US$5,690,669. The two films are based on Shogakukan's Duel Masters and A Penguin's Troubles (Penguin no Mondai) television anime series.
