Kadokawa CEO Predicts Anime of Sugar Dark Light Novel (Updated)

Shinichiro Inoue, the president and CEO of the Japanese publisher Kadokawa Shoten, predicted that Enji Arai's Sugar Dark: Umerareta Yami to Shōjo (Sugar Dark: The Buried Darkness and the Girl) light novel will "certainly" get an anime adaptation. Inoue made his comments during the 14th Sneaker Awards ceremony on November 18.
The Grand Prize-winning dark fantasy story follows a boy named Muoru who has been falsely arrested and sent to a cemetery to perform forced labor. There, he calls himself the "grave keeper" and meets a beautiful girl named Meria. Muoru becomes fascinated with Meria as he spends his days digging a hole containing the undead monster named "The Dark."
Inoue noted that Kadokawa Shoten's Sneaker Awards have only given a Grand Prize four times in its 15-year history. Before Sugar Dark won it this year, the last light novel to win the Grand Prize was Nagaru Tanigawa's The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya in 2003. Inoue described the Sugar Dark light novel as a "ground-breaking work" that combines the worlds of dark fantasy and light novels. The artist mebae illustrated the work.
