Japanese Box Office, May 7-8 (Updated)

Gaku debuts at #1, Detective Conan, Gantz, Shin-chan stay in top 5

The live-action film based on Shinichi Ishizuka's Gaku - Minna no Yama mountain-climbing manga debuted at #1 on both Kogyo Tsushinsha and Box Office Mojo's charts. In the story, Sanpo (Shun Oguri) is an experienced mountain climber and rescue team volunteer who helps rookie mountain rescue teammate Kumi (Masami Nagasawa) in gaining rescue experience. However a blizzard causes multiple accidents to occur at the same time, forcing Kumi to put her training to the test. According to Box Office Mojo, the film made US$3,258,511 on 315 screens.

Detective Conan: Quarter of Silence, the 15th anime film based on Gōshō Aoyama's Detective Conan manga, dropped from #1 to #2 in its fourth weekend on Kogyo Tsushinsha's chart. The film ranked at #3 on Box Office Mojo's chart and added US$1,894,783 more on 335 screens for a new total of US$32,336,814.

Gantz: Perfect Answer, the second live-action film based on Hiroya Oku's Gantz manga, dropped from #2 to #3 in its third weekend on Kogyo Tsushinsha's chart. According to Box Office Mojo, it ranked at #2 and earned the equivalent of US$1,917,454 on 375 screens for a three-week total of US$25,719,976.

Eiga Crayon Shin-chan: Arashi o Yobu Ōgon no Spy Daisakusen, this year's film based on Yoshito Usui's Crayon Shin-chan comedy manga, dropped from #3 to #5 on Kogyo Tsushinsha's chart, and dropped from #4 to #6 on Box Office Mojo's chart. In its fourth weekend, it added US$868,135 on 307 screens to its gross-to-date of US$12,710,736.

Tōfu Kozō, the 3D computer-animated film adaptation of the Tōfu Kozō Sugoroku-dōchū Furidashi novel by Natsuhiko Kyōgoku (Loups-Garous, Mōryō no Hako, Requiem from the Darkness), dropped from #7 to #9 in its second weekend with US$433,380 on 423 screens for a cumulative total of US$3,962,672.

OOO, Den-O, All Riders: Let's Go Kamen Riders, the film which celebrates the Toei movie company's 60th anniversary and the Kamen Rider franchise's 40th anniversary with all 28 Kamen Rider heroes and special guests, dropped from #8 to #12 in its sixth weekend. It earned the equivalent of US$344,254 on 251 screens for a cumulative total of US$15,816,843.

The stereoscopic 3D conversion of Kenji Kamiyama and Production I.G's Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex: Solid State Society jumped back onto Box Office Mojo's chart at #14 in its seventh weekend. The film earned US$137,156 on 32 screens for a gross-to-date of US$2,053,304.

Onigamiden (Legend of the Millennium Dragon), Hirotsugu Kawasaki and Studio Pierrot's film adaptation of a historical novel by Takafumi Takada, dropped from #12 to #15 during its second weekend. The film earned US$43,606 on 80 screens for a two-week total of US$805,052.

Doraemon: Shin Nobita to Tetsujin Heidan - Habatake Tenshi-tachi is no longer listed on either chart.

Update: Box Office Mojo has added Hoshi o Ou Kodomo's numbers to its list. The film debuted at #14 with US$240,978 on 20 screens. Hoshi o Ou Kodomo' inclusion pushes Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex: Solid State Society and Onigamiden down one spot each to #15 and #16, respectively
