Hiroo Otaka: K-ON! made almost as much as Spielberg's Tintin in Japan in 1/2 the time

The film journalist Hiroo Otaka reported on Monday that Naoko Yamada and Kyoto Animation's K-ON! anime film surpassed Steven Spielberg's The Adventures of Tintin at the weekend Japanese box office. According to Otaka, K-ON! earned 316,310,000 yen (about US$4,054,000) on 137 screens during the December 3-4 weekend. By contrast, Tintin needed 895 screens to earn 319,290,000 yen (about US$4,092,000) in the four days between December 1 and December 4.

Update: The K-ON! film made more in two days than Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone (US$2.4 million) and The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya (US$997,803) did during their respective opening weekends, but less than One Piece Film Strong World (US$11,692,830) and Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance (US$5,302,760).

Update 2: Kogyo Tsushinsha reported that the K-On! film sold 237,800 tickets during the weekend. By contrast, Tintin sold 148,800 tickets for 219,500,000 yen (US$2.822 million) on the same December 3-4 weekend (as opposed to the four days since its December 1 opening). The two films were No. 2 and No. 3 below the live-action Kaibutsu-kun film. Source: Oricon
