The annual Angoulême International Comics Festival, which will take place January 26 to 29, 2012 in France, has announced the 58 nominees for four awards: Best Comic, Best Heritage Comic, Best Youth Comic, and Best Crime Comic. The Best Comic list includes five manga titles: Yoshihiro Tatsumi's A Drifting Life (pictured right), Hikaru Nakamura's Saint Young Men, Kaoru Mori's A Bride's Story, Susumu Higa's Suna no Tsurugi, and Issei Eifuku and Taiyo Matsumoto's Takemitsuzamurai.

Osamu Tezuka's Boku no Manga Jinsei (My Manga Life) and Shōtarō Ishinomori's Kyū Tō Ryū (Nine Dragons) and Ryū no Michi (Ryū's Path) were nominated for the Heritage award, while Kanata Konami's Chi's Sweet Home (pictured left) is on the list of Youth nominees. The Heritage Award recognizes reissues of previously published material, while the Youth Comic category is for comics aimed at young readers ages 7 through 12. Atsushi Kaneko's SOIL was selected in the Crime category, which awards the best detective and crime titles.

Naoki Urasawa and the late Tezuka's Pluto won the Prix Intergénérations (Intergenerational Award) at the festival last year, and Ishinomori's Sabu to Ichi Torimono Hikae was among the nominated manga. Ishinomori's Cyborg 009 and Tezuka's Ore wa Sarutobi da! and Mighty Atom Anthology (Volume 2) were chosen with other manga for the 2009 festival. Manga by Yoshihiro Tatsumi, Shigeru Mizuki, and Tezuka were nominated in 2008, and Mizuki's Opération Mort (Soin Gyokusai Se yo) won the Heritage award that year. Naoki Urasawa's 20th Century Boys made the official selection in 2004.
