Leiji Matsumoto Plans Cosmo Super Dreadnought Mahoroba Film

Zero Goods Universe, a design/retail shop for character goods inspired by manga and anime creator Leiji Matsumoto (Space Pirate Captain Harlock, Space Battleship Yamato, Galaxy Express 999), announced on Saturday that Matsumoto is planning a Cosmo Super Dreadnought Mahoroba (Mahoroba -Chō Jikū Senkan-) film for 2013. Matsumoto appeared at Zero Future, the annual event organized by Zero Goods Universe, to reveal preliminary concepts for the project on Sunday.

Chō Jikū Senkan Mahoroba started as a manga (pictured left) that Matsumoto serialized in Shogakukan's Big Gold magazine from 1993 to 1998. The two-volume story begins when a fire breaks out in a certain rundown apartment. A young man named Shirō rescues an old man from the fire, but not before the old man suffers fatal injuries. At the instructions of the old man, Shirō photographs a picture of a grand battleship in the apartment before everything burns down. That night, the old man visits Shirō's home, and says he wants to see the Mahoroba — the ship in the photograph — before he dies.

Despite the name similarities, Matsumoto's Chō Jikū Senkan Mahoroba project has no relation to Big West's Super Dimension/Chō Jikū anime franchise or Akira Kojima's Mahoraba manga and anime. Matsumoto had also revealed plans for a new Zero Desigze anime and a live-action Galaxy Express 999 project earlier this year, but neither has been released yet.
