Chihayafuru Manga Released in Bilingual Edition in Japan

Kodansha began selling a bilingual edition of Yuki Suetsugu's first two Chihayafuru manga volumes in Japan in December and February. Chihayafuru is the latest Kodansha manga title to receive an English/Japanese edition in Japan. This story, which follows a school girl competing in the Japanese card game of karuta, won the second Manga Taisho (Cartoon Grand Prize) and inspired a television anime series.
Kodansha International launched its bilingual manga program with The New Kindaichi Files (Kindaichi Shonen no Jikenbo/Kindaichi Case Files) in 1999. The initiative continued with GTO, Division Chief Kosaku Shima, Cardcaptor Sakura, The Genius Bakabon, Asakiyumemishi - The Tale of Genji, Love Hina, Princess Knight, Akko-chan's Got a Secret (Himitsu no Akko-chan), Ah My Goddess, GeGeGe no Kitarō, Zipang, Peach Girl, Devilman, Ghost in the Shell, and Chobits. However, Kodansha halted its program in 2003, shortly after Tokyopop began publishing Kodansha's titles in the now ubiquitous unflipped, trade paperback format in North America.
Kodansha restarted the bilingual manga program in 2006, and added the following titles since then:
- Nodame Cantabile
- President Kosaku Shima (continuation of Division Chief Kosaku Shima)
- Angel Bank
- Ghost in the Shell: Man Machine Interface
- Chihayafuru
