No Winners Announced for 3rd Kyoto Animation Award

The official website of the anime studio Kyoto Animation (The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Lucky Star, K-ON!) announced the results of the third Kyoto Animation Award program on Friday. However, the studio awarded no grand prizes or honorable mentions in the manga or novel categories.

The judges committee thanked creators for submitting their works but said they could select no winning works after reviewing the submissions. This year was the first time that the awards program did not include a scenario category. Kyoto Animation offered 500,000-yen (about US$6,200) grand prizes and 100,000-yen (US$1,200) honorable mention prizes in this year's awards.

Last year, Kyoto Animation awarded four honorable mentions in the novel category but awarded no grand prizes in any category or honorable mentions in the manga and scenario categories. There were also no grand prize winners named in 2010. Kyoto Animation has published two Chūni-byō demo Koi ga Shitai! (I Have Adolescent Delusions, But I Want to Love!) novels by Toraoko and one O-Yashiki to Coppelia novel by Rikuki Ichinose, and both works received honorable mentions in the 2009 awards program.

Kyoto Animation announced the award program in 2009 and offered 300,000-yen (about US$3,600) grand prizes and 100,000-yen honorable mention prizes in novel, manga, and scenario (script treatment) categories. In the first year, the rules noted that popular winning entries were to have had a chance at being animated by Kyoto Animation, but the rules for the second year did not mention this possibility.

Update: Kyoto Animation did announce in December that it has plans to animate Torako's honorable mention novel, Chūni-byō demo Koi ga Shitai!
