Saki Manga to Resume in April After Creator's Surgery

Ritz Kobayashi, Aguri Igarashi also collaborate on new Saki tie-in manga series

This year's seventh issue of Square Enix's Young Gangan magazine is announcing on Friday that Ritz Kobayashi is resuming her Saki manga in the eighth issue on April 5. The manga has been on hiatus since February after she injured herself during a research trip and had to undergo an operation.

Kobayashi has been drawing the manga in Young Gangan since 2006, and Square Enix had scheduled the 11th book volume for April before her schedule setback. The manga inspired a television anime series, and a television anime adaptation of its National Tournament arc has been green-lit as well.

Aguri Igarashi had been drawing a separate Saki Achiga-hen episode of side-A spinoff manga since 2011, but that manga just ended on Tuesday. Igarashi's manga inspired a 12-episode anime series last year and Crunchyroll streamed the series as it aired in Japan. More special episodes were announced in June. The first aired in December, followed by the second on January 29 and two more in the works.

Square Enix's Monthly Shonen Gangan magazine also revealed on Tuesday that Kobayashi and Igarashi are planning a new manga series. Kobayashi herself confirmed that the new series is tied to Saki. Kobayashi posted a drawing (show below) of the Saki character Awai in middle school, but cautioned this drawing is not for the new series.
