Toho Makes October TV Anime About Sabae High School Boys

Film studio's new anime unit to set show in western Japan after working on Majestic Prince

A television anime about the adolescence and friendship of high school boys in Sabae City is now in the works at TOHO and other companies. The anime will premiere in October.

According to TOHO, the story is the coming-of-age of high school boys, living in a rural area, who create friendships at school. (Sabae is a city in the western Japanese prefecture of Fukui.) Six members of the anime's staff visited the city and observed the city's eyeglasses shops and main shopping district for research on Sunday. The television series will incorporate much of what the region is famous for, including its world-renowned eyeglasses, Nishiyama Park, and local cuisine.

TOHO only began full-fledged efforts in anime production recently, after distributing anime films in theaters for decades. Its new anime business unit launched Ginga Kikōtai Majestic Prince this month.

The Fukui Shimbun paper notes that many anime fans visited another city, Kanazawa in the neighboring prefecture of Ishikawa, because the 2011 Hanasaku Iroha television anime was set in that city. The television series inspired the Hanasaku Iroha: Home Sweet Home film that opened last month.
