Kaiji's Fukumoto Launches Shin Kurosawa Manga

posted on by Joanne Mertz
Sequel to 11-volume Saikyō Densetsu Kurosawa manga to premiere this month

Shogakukan has announced that Nobuyuki Fukumoto (Tobaku Mokushiroku Kaiji, Tobaku Haōden Zero) will debut a new serialization titled Shin Kurosawa in the Big Comic Original magazine on May 20, to mark the 40th anniversary of the magazine. The story will be a sequel to Fukumoto's 2003-2006 comedy serialization, Saikyō Densetsu Kurosawa (The Legend of Strongest Man Kurosawa). The original manga told the everyday (sometimes tumultuous) stories of a blue-collar worker named Kurosawa, who wants to change his life and become popular after no one showed up at his 44th birthday.

The tagline on the new manga announcement reads [Highlight white text to read spoiler: Is Kurosawa making a comeback!? Isn't that impossible!? Well, didn't he die!?]

Fukumoto is well-known for his series of manga about an indebted gambler, the first titled Tobaku Mokushiroku Kaiji. More than 11 million copies of the different Kaiji manga titles and two anime series have been released, and Fukumoto revived the character in 2009 for Tobaku Datenroku Kaiji ~Kazuya-hen~, which Fukumoto just resumed last month. A Kaiji live-action film opened in Japan in October 2009 and a sequel opened in 2011.
