George Akiyama's Sutegataki Hitobito Manga Gets Film

Director and Versus/Alive actor Hideo Sakaki will premiere his live-action film adaptation of George Akiyama's manga Sutegataki Hitobito at the Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF) on October 17. The film stars Nao Ōmori (Ichi the Killer, From Up On Poppy Hill) as Yūsuke Mamiana, an unemployed, broke simpleton who is obsessed with sex. Actress Hitomi Miwa (Otaku in Love) co-stars alongside Omori as the film's heroine Kyōko Okabe.
The story follows Yūsuke after he returns to his hometown. While there, he encounters the bruised Kyōko, the only person who does not judge him. The two begin living together and work toward finding the meaning of happiness for each of them.
The film's supporting cast includes Jun Miho, Tomorowo Taguchi, Kenichi Takito, Genjiro Arato, Susumu Terajima, and Gajiro Sato.
Sutegataki Hitobito ran in Shogakukan's Big Gold magazine from 1996 to 1999. Akiyama's 1970s manga Ashura inspired an anime film by Toei Animation last year.
Sutegataki Hitobito will open in theaters in Japan next year after its premiere at TIFF. Sakaki already filmed the project from May to June of last year at his hometown on the Gotō Islands in western Japan.
