Patema Inverted Anime Film Wins at Scotland Loves Animation Fest

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge
Festival also hosted world premiere of Majocco Shimai no Yoyo to Nene film

Yasuhiro Yoshiura's (Time of Eve, Pale Cocoon) Patema Inverted (Sakasama no Patema) film won both the Judge's Award and Audience Award at Edinburgh's Scotland Loves Animation festival on Monday. Judges noted the film as ambitious with "good use of both perspective and gravity with a nice mix of a coherent storyline, nice designs and some amusing touches." The festival will present Yoshiura with both awards in Tokyo later this year.

Patema Inverted takes place in an underground world where tunnels extend everywhere. Even though they live in dark and confined spaces, people wear protective clothes and lead quiet and enjoyable lives. Patema, a princess in her underground village, loves to explore the tunnels. Her favorite place is a "danger zone" that her village prohibits people from entering. Even though she's scolded, Patema's curiosity can't be held back. No one ever explained what the supposed danger was. On her usual trip to the "danger zone," Patema faces unexpected events. When hidden secrets come to light, the story begins to unfold.

Other films shown at the Edinburgh and GLASGOW festivals include the world premiere Majocco Shimai no Yoyo to Nene, HAL, Steins;Gate Fuka Ryōiki no Déjà vu, Aura: Maryūinkōga Saigo no Tatakai, Garden of Words, Guskō Budori no Denki, Fuse Teppō Musume no Torimonochō, Perfect Blue, The Place Promised in Our Early Days, Hunter × Hunter: Phantom Rouge, and the first three Evangelion films.

Patema Inverted premiered at France's Annecy animation festival in June.
