Otomen's Kanno Adapts Shakespeare's Richard III as Manga Series

Classic historical play re-imagined as dark fantasy about hermaphrodite king

Otomen manga creator Aya Kanno is adapting William Shakespeare's historical play Richard III as a manga series. Akita Shoten released the first 50-page chapter of Bara-Ō no Sōretsu (The Rose King's Funeral Procession) for free on its website on Friday, after it ran in the November issue of Akita Shoten's Monthly Princess last month.

The manga's dark fantasy story takes place during the Wars of the Roses — sporadic wars fought for the throne of England between 1455 and 1485. The story centers on the unfortunate fate of a man born with a hermaphrodite body, Richard III.

The first chapter will be available for free on Akita Shoten's website until December 5. The second chapter will premiere in the December issue of Monthly Princess on Wednesday.
