3rd Madoka Magica Film Tops 1 Billion Yen/US$10 Million (Updated)

Distributor Warner Brothers reported on Friday that Puella Magi Madoka Magica: The Movie -Rebellion- (Gekijō-ban Mahō Shōjo Madoka Magica [Shinpen]: Hangyaku no Monogatari) has earned over 1 billion yen (about US$10 million) between its opening day on Saturday, October 26 and Thursday, November 7. The film sold 722,527 tickets for 1,004,538,650 yen (US$10.237 million) in 13 days. It is fastest to top 1 billion yen among all films that came from a late-night television anime. (2011's K-ON! film was the previous record holder.)
The new Madoka Magica film is the third film from a late-night television anime to top the 1-billion-yen threshold, after K-ON! and this year's anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day film. The new Madoka Magica film is still playing in 129 theaters in its second week, so it is within range of possibly surpassing the K-ON! film's final box office total of about 1.9 billion yen.
The third Madoka Magica film opened at #1 by selling 271,279 tickets for 400,003,600 yen (about US$4 million) two weekends ago. It then dropped to #2 in box office earnings its second weekend. (It dropped to #3 in the raw number of tickets sold.)
