Kyoto Animation Streams 3rd Beyond the Boundary: Idol Trial Short

Girls transform into idols to give verdict to Hiroomi on the charge of being "obscene" and "existing"

Kyoto Animation began streaming the third anime short for the Beyond the Boundary television anime on Monday.

At the beginning of the short, a naked Hiroomi (voiced by Tatsuhisa Suzuki) stands before the jury, and is immediately accused of his obscenity and is called a pervert by his own sister. He says that he is not obscene or a pervert, but merely has a sister complex, to which his sister orders an assault on him with various artillery. Gracefully, he dodges all of her attacks, but a horrified Mirai exclaims that for a second, she saw a mosaic covering a part of his body.

Presiding judge Ai arrives, and says that the “Ai” in her name stands for “eye contact,” and once you meet eyes with her, you will be her cute little slave. Mirai comments that it's strange that even though she says horrible things every time she appears, Ai is still presiding judge. Mitsuki assures her that it's because “cuteness is justice.”

Hiroomi returns to the stand unharmed and assures the girls that he can just wrap his muffler around his unmentionables, and he says that his catchphrase is, “That's my inari sushi (sushi wrapped in tofu).” Ai says there is no reason to say Hiroomi's crime, and minori says his existence itself is a crime. After the girls perform their dance, Ai tells Hiroomi that his punishment is to have his hands stuck between Akihito's arms for three days. However, Hiroomi happily comments that his hands are very warm that way, and Akihito is unhappy because it is like he is getting punished instead.

The ending theme of the short is “Poppy no Kaeri Michi” (The Road Home Filled With Poppies) by Yuri Yamaoka (voice of Ai).

There are three shorts scheduled. They are not tied to the story of the television anime, and have the following premise: As long as evil is rampant in this world, four "angels" will judge your sins.

The dark fantasy story of the main Beyond the Boundary anime follows a high school second-year student named Akihito Kanbara (KENN). Although the boy appears human, he is half Yōmu and invulnerable to wounds because he can heal quickly. One day, Akihito meets first-year student Mirai Kuriyama (Risa Taneda) when it seems she is about to jump from the school rooftop. Mirai is isolated because of her ability to manipulate blood, which is unique even among the Under World Warriors. Disturbing events begin to unfold after Akihito saves Mirai.

Taichi Ishidate (episodes of Clannad After Story, Hyōka, K-ON) is directing the anime at Kyoto Animation, and Jukki Hanada (Gakuen Alice, Chūnibyō demo Koi ga Shitai!, Steins;Gate) is in charge of the series scripts. Miku Kadowaki (The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya, K-ON! movie animation director) is designing the characters.

The anime premiered in Japan last month, and Crunchyroll is streaming the anime into several countries as it airs. Sentai Filmworks also announced last month that it licensed the anime for North America.

Nagomu Torii's original Kyōkai no Kanata light novel received an honorable mention in the novel category of the Kyoto Animation Award program in 2011. The studio released the first volume last year, and the second volume shipped in April.
