Kamen Teacher Gets Live-Action Special Before Film

Nogizaka 46's Mai Shiraishi to co-star in February 14 special about isolated school

The live-action television series based on Tohru Fujisawa's Kamen Teacher manga is spawning a television special on Valentine's Day, one week before the February 22 film sequel.

The manga centers around Gōta Araki (played by Kis-My-Ft2 idol group member Taisuke Fujigaya), a special instructor in the Kamen Teacher Program who gives problem schools a complete overhaul. When he dons a mask, Araki becomes "Kamen Teacher Hayato Jūmonji," a hero for justice. He brings light to troubled schools by putting down delinquents.

The special episode will tell a side story of Gōta Araki/Kamen Teacher six months before the events of the live-action drama series. Araki is sent to St. Fictional High school to deal with the third year's Class D as an assistant homeroom teacher. The students seem diligent at first glance and the class does not seem to have any problems in sight. However, the seemingly-normal school is actually surrounded by a barrier that isolates both the teachers and students from the outside world.

Mai Shiraishi from idol group Nogizaka 46 will be playing the role of Akari Hayase, a student who attempted suicide at St. Fictional High School. The role will mark Shiraishi's debut in a drama. The drama will also co-star Natsuna (Gantz), Masataka Kubota (Limit, Ōoku), Eiichiro Funakoshi (Liar Game: Reborn), and Takumi Saitō (Space Battleship Yamato [2010]).

The manga ran in Shueisha's Weekly Young Magazine from 2006 to 2007, and Shueisha published four volumes. Fujisawa launched a sequel called Kamen Teacher Black in Weekly Young Magazine last April. The television series premiered in Japan on July 6.
