Moribito's Nahoko Uehashi Wins Hans Christian Andersen Author Award

Uehashi also wrote the novels that inspired Kemono no Sou-ja Erin

Nahoko Uehashi, author of the original novels behind Production I.G's Kemono no Sou-ja Erin and Moribito - Guardian of the Spirit fantasy anime series, won the 2014 Hans Christian Andersen Author Award on Monday.

The International Board on Books for Young People awards the Hans Christian Andersen Awards to one author and one illustrator every two years for making a large contribution to children's literature. Uehashi is the second Japanese recipient of the Author Award after Michio Mado in 1994. Suekichi Akaba (Suho's White Horse) and Mitsumasa Anno won the Andersen Illustrator Award in 1980 and 1984, respectively.

Uehashi said to interviewers, "I have wanted my books to be read by both children and adults alike, so I am very happy to learn that my stories pulled at the heartstrings of readers overseas." Uehashi is a cultural anthropologist and she uses her knowledge to create well-rounded fantasy worlds within her works.

The North American publisher Scholastic published the first two volumes of Moribito in English. Viz Media licensed the anime series to air on Neon Alley and will release the series on Blu-ray and DVD later this year. Media Blasters previously licensed the series and released it on DVD and Blu-ray Disc in North American between 2009-2011. The show aired on Adult Swim TV in 2009.

Uehashi published Kemono no Sou-ja between 2006 and 2009. Itoe Takemoto launched a manga version on Kodansha's Monthly Shonen Sirius magazine in 2008, and the NHK-Educational channel premiered Production I.G's anime version of the first two novels in 2009.

Kemono no Sou-ja Erin is streaming on Crunchyroll and Moribito - Guardian of the Spirit previously streamed on Crunchyroll.
