From the New World Manga to End in 2 More Chapters

posted on by Crystalyn Hodgkins
Manga adapts Yūsuke Kishi's award-winning novel that inspired 2012-2013 TV anime

The May issue of Kodansha's Bessatsu Shōnen Magazine is announcing on Wednesday that Tōru Oikawa will end his manga adaptation of Yūsuke Kishi's From the New World (Shin Sekai Yori) novel in two more chapters. If the manga does not take a break, it will end in the July issue on June 9.

Oikawa launched the manga adaptation of Kishi's award-winning 2008 speculative fiction novel in May 2012, and Kodansha is publishing the sixth compiled volume on April 9.

The original novel is set in Japan a millennium from now. Five children — Saki, Satoru, Maria, Mamoru, and Shun — have been born and raised in a tranquil town that can be described as a utopia, overflowing with water and green foilage. The world is ruled by people who have the "Juryoku," the psychic ability to materialize anything one desires.

After a certain incident, Saki and the others come to realize the true nature of their world. Before long, they learn everything, including the bloody history that brought humanity to this state. The five throw themselves into life-threatening adventure and fighting to protect friends and a world on the brink of collapse.

Vertical is publishing the manga in North America. The company released the third volume in March.

The original novel shared The Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers of Japan's 29th Nihon SF Taishō Award with Mitsuo Iso's Dennō Coil anime series in 2008. A-1 Pictures television anime adaptation of the novel aired in 2012-2013, and Crunchyroll streamed the series as it aired. Sentai Filmworks is releasing the series on home video next week.
