Level-5's Yo-kai Watch Games Get Film in December

Movie to feature TV anime characters & latest creatures from Yōkai Watch 2 games

The July issue of Shogakukan's Monthly CoroCoro Comic magazine is announcing on Friday that a film adaptation of Level-5's Yo-kai Watch games has been green-lit. Yo-kai Watch: The Movie will open in Japan on December 20. The movie will feature special guests such as popular familiar characters from the Yo-kai Watch television anime and the latest yo-kai (supernatural creatures) from the upcoming Yo-kai Watch 2 sequel games.

Advance tickets will go on sale on July 19, and they will come with a limited-edition Fuyunyan medal. The magazine teases that the medal is no ordinary medal, since it has an amazing secret that will be significant to Yo-kai Watch 2.
The story of the games and anime begins when Kēta discovers an old capsule toy vending machine in the forest. Kēta receives a mysterious watch and meets a ghost named Whisper. Whisper tells Kēta that the watch allows him to see supernatural creatures — both good and evil — that he could not see before in everyday life. With Whisper and his other companion Jibanyan, Kēta explores his town for other ghosts to battle or befriend.

Game developer Level-5 announced the Yo-kai Watch franchise in 2011 with a game, manga, and anime already planned. The franchise's first game for the Nintendo 3DS debuted in Japan last July, and the anime premiered this past January. The manga has three volumes that have sold 1.5 million copies.

Dentsu Entertainment USA is offering the anime to broadcast and merchandising partners in the Americas. Other game franchises from LEVEL-5 Inc. — Professor Layton and Inazuma Eleven — also inspired films.
