Attack on Titan Manga Wins 2014 Harvey Award

The Harvey Awards announced its 2014 winners at a banquet on September 6, and Hajime Isayama's Attack on Titan manga won an award in the "Best American Edition of Foreign Material" category.
Attack on Titan has topped graphic novel sales in North America and Japan, with more than 40 million copies sold as of July 30. Its anime adaptation is currently airing on Adult Swim's Toonami block. Kodansha USA is currently releasing the manga in North America.
Attack on Titan was nominated for the award in July alongside Taiyo Matsumoto's Sunny, Shigeru Mizuki's Showa: A History of Showa Japan (Comic Showa-Shi), Matz's The Killer volume 4 by Studio Archaia, and Ulli Lust's Today Is the Last Day of the Rest of Your Life by Fantagraphics Books.
Also nominated was Deron Bennett's American comic adaptation of Shōtarō Ishinomori's Cyborg 009 manga. Bennett's Cyborg 009 was nominated for Best Original Graphic Novel, Best Letterer, and Special Award for Excellence in Presentation, but won none of those awards.
Unlike the Eisner Awards and other awards in the North American comic book industry, the Harvey Awards are nominated and selected by the comic book professionals themselves. The Harvey Awards were held in conjunction with Baltimore Comic-Con.
Last year, the 22nd volume of Naoki Urasawa's 20th Century Boys manga was nominated in the same category. In 2012, Shigeru Mizuki's Onward Towards Our Noble Deaths and Ōji Suzuki's A Single Match manga were nominated. In 2011, the Ax - Alternative Manga anthology was nominated in the same category.
This is the first time a work based on Japanese material has won an award in this category since 2010, when Helen McCarthy's book The Art of Osamu Tezuka: God of Manga won.
