DVD adapts "Yōsei-tachi no Batsu Game" manga spinoff as main manga prints volume 50

Fairy Tail manga creator Hiro Mashima and the anime's voice cast announced at the Fairy Tail Ryūōsai event on Saturday that a new original anime DVD has been green-lit. The DVD will adapt "Yōsei-tachi no Batsu Game" (Fairy Penalty Game), a one-shot manga spinoff that ran in the August 2013 issue of Kodansha's Magazine Special.

The event also reported on the previously revealed new anime film with Mashima's direct involvement, and it unveiled a new key visual for the Tartarus arc. The television anime will start the Tartarus arc's preface in episode #234 on May 23. The main manga series is commemorating the 50th compiled book volume with a limited edition. The limited edition will bundle 50 postcards with new illustrations by Mashima on July 17.

Text: A new story begins from a village where giants are encased in ice!! A creeping new enemy... Suddenly taking a child's form... The new chapter, Tartarus arc, enters the battle! This will be a one-sided extermination. No one will remain alive.

The manga follows the adventures of world's most notorious mage guild, Fairy Tail. It already inspired two television anime, several previous original video anime projects, and spinoff manga. The franchise's first anime film, Fairy Tail the Movie: Phoenix Priestess, opened in Japan on August 18, 2012.

Del Rey published the first 12 volumes of the original manga in North America, and Kodansha resumed publishing the manga in English with the 13th volume in 2011. Crunchyroll streams the ongoing television anime into several countries as it airs in Japan, and Funimation has been releasing DVD/Blu-ray sets.
