May 6 anime DVD's story will center on "Shinya Nakamura Incident"

The official website of Gamon Sakurai's Ajin - Demi-Human manga revealed on Friday that a limited edition of the manga's eighth compiled book volume will bundle an original anime DVD (OAD). Both the regular and limited edition of the eighth volume will ship on May 6. Pre-orders for the volume will end on February 19. The limited edition will cost 3,600 yen (about US$29.50).

The website teases the anime DVD's story:

The Ajin Control Committee's most feared worst-case scenario: "The Shinya Nakamura Incident."
The truth will finally be revealed!
The story of the country's first Ajin will get a forbidden anime adaptation!

The cast includes Yūki Kaji, Takuya Eguchi, Sumire Uesaka, and Makoto Furukawa.

Hiroaki Ando will direct the anime at Polygon Pictures, with script supervision by Hiroshi Seko. Both are returning from the manga's film and television anime adaptation. Kenta Ihara is penning the script.

The Ajin television anime and film trilogy share the same staff and cast. The first film, subtitled "Shōdō" (Impulse, pictured at left), will open in Japan on November 27 in 30 theaters in Japan for a two-week limited screening. The film already screened during in the Tokyo International Film Festival on October 28.

In the manga's story, an immortal first appeared on an African battlefield 17 years ago. Later, rare, unknown new immortal lifeforms began appearing among humans, and they became known as "Ajin" (demi-humans). Just before summer vacation, a Japanese high school student named Kei Nagai is instantly killed in a traffic accident on his way home from school. However, he is revived, and a price is placed on his head. Thus begins a boy's life on the run from all of humankind.

The TV anime series will go deeper into the story and provide more details on the story's world. Netflix will stream the new episodes in Japan three days after they air on Japanese television. Netflix will then premiere all the episodes at once in "regions Netflix currently operates outside of Japan" in mid-2016.

Sakurai launched the manga in Kodansha's Good! Afternoon magazine in 2012, and Kodansha published the seventh compiled book volume in Japan on Friday. Vertical published the sixth volume in North America on August 25. Crunchyroll is posting new chapters as Kodansha publishes them in Japan.

The manga ranked as a top manga series on the Nationwide Bookstore Employees' Recommended Comics of 2014 list and in the 2014 edition of the Kono Manga ga Sugoi! guidebook. The series also received a nomination for the 18th Annual Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize "Reader Award" last year.

Update: The cover of the December 2015 issue of Born Digital's CGWORLD magazine has revealed that the manga now has 3.9 million copies in print. The issue will ship on November 10.
