Shinkai's 'your name.' Tops Box Office For 7th Weekend

Update: Shinkai's your name. sold 513,000 tickets for 700 million yen (US$6.7 million) over Saturday and Sunday. (Monday was a national holiday.) Disney's Frozen was #1 for five weeks in 2014 before being replaced by Detective Conan: Dimensional Sniper — only to return to the top for 10 more weeks. Makoto Shinkai's your name. (Kimi no Na wa.) anime film ranked #1 for the October 8-9 weekend — and maintained its top position for seventh straight weekend. As of October 8, the film has earned a total of 13.8 billion yen (about US$134 million) and sold 10.61 million tickets in 44 days.
Shinkai's film is the fifth highest-grossing anime film (after Ponyo's 15.50 billion yen or US$152.9 million), the 6th highest-grossing Japanese film, and 15th highest-grossing Japanese or overseas film overall. The film surpassed the 2013 Japanese box office total of Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli's The Wind Rises (12.02 billion yen or US$118.6 million). In addition, your name. has now earned more in Japan than Jurassic Park and Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace. The only anime films to earn more than your name. are Ghibli and Miyazaki's Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, Princess Mononoke, and Ponyo.
Shinkai's latest is already 2016's highest-grossing film in Japan. The film reached 10 billion yen faster than Disney's Frozen, which closed in Japan after earning 25.4 billion yen in the box office to become Japan's #3 highest-grossing film of all time after Spirited Away and Titanic. Frozen reached 10 billion yen in 37 days while your name. reached the same milestone in 28 days.
Kyoto Animation's anime film of Yoshitoki Ōima's A Silent Voice (Koe no Katachi) manga dropped from #3 to #4 in its fourth weekend. The film opened on September 17 on 120 screens.
The third live-action Ushijima the Loan Shark film (Yamikin Ushijima-kun Part 3) film dropped from #6 to #9 in its third weekend. It opened on September 22 on 184 screens.
Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi's Shin Godzilla film dropped from #7 to #10 in its 11th weekend. As of September 6, the film sold more than 4.2 million tickets, the highest among all Heisei-era Godzilla films. As of October 3, Shin Godzilla has earned a total of 7.56 billion yen (U$74.6 million).
