Shogakukan's Shogaku Ninensei Magazine Ceases Publication

posted on by Rafael Antonio Pineda
Only Shogaku Ichinensei magazine remains of elementary school magazine line

Shogakukan announced with the November issue of its Shogaku Ninensei magazine on October 1 that it will cease publication of the magazine due to low circulation. The magazine's last issue will be its combined February-March 2017 issue, which will ship in December.

The magazine is part of a series of magazines aimed at elementary school children collectively called the "Shogakukan no Gakunen Betsu Gakushū Zasshi" (Shogakukan Elementary Year Learning Magazines), which had a magazine targeting every grade level from first to sixth grade. The line began with Shogaku Gonensei and Shogaku Rokunensei, targeting fifth and sixth graders respectively. Both launched in 1922, the same year of Shogakukan's founding. Shogaku Ninensei (for second graders) launched in 1925.

In 1973, Shogaku Sannensei had a circulation of 1.02 million copies. Since then, the magazines' circulations have declined to the range of tens-of-thousands. Shogaku Gonensei and Shogaku Rokunensei both ceased publication in 2010, and Shogaku Yonensei (for fourth graders) and Shogaku Sannensei (for third graders) followed suit in 2012. With Shogaku Ninensei now ceasing publication, only Shogaku Ichinensei, targeting first graders, remains of the original magazine line.

Some of the manga that ran in Shogaku Ninensei include Mayumi Muroyama's Asari-chan, Miho Asada's Kaitō! Pokemon V, Tetsuhiro Koshita's Inazume Eleven Go, Yasuko Sugiki's GoGo Tamagochi, Mako Morie's Jewelpet, Tadashi Akiyama and Sayori Abe's Hana Kappa, and Takahiro Yamashita's Pokémon 4-koma Daihyakka.
