21st Detective Conan Film Earns Franchise's Highest Opening Weekend Box Office

25th Shin-chan film debuts at #2, live-action ReLIFE film debuts at #8

Meitantei Conan Kara Kurenai no Love Letter (Detective Conan: Crimson Love Letter), the 21st Detective Conan (Case Closed) anime film, sold 987,568 tickets and earned 1,286,928,000 yen (about US$11.88 million) in its opening Saturday-Sunday weekend, setting a new opening weekend record for the franchise. The film also topped the Japanese weekend box office chart. The film opened in 354 theaters and 368 screens.

In comparison, Detective Conan: Junkoku no Nightmare (Detective Conan: The Darkest Nightmare), the 20th film, sold 933,800 tickets for 1.209 billion yen (about US$11.1 million at the time) in its first two days at the box office in April 2016.

The 20th film went on to sell more than 4.71 million tickets and earn more than 6 billion yen (about US$56 million at the time), setting a new record for overall earnings for a film in the franchise. The 2015 film Detective Conan: Gōka no Himawari (Detective Conan: Sunflowers of Inferno) held the previous record, with 4.48 billion yen (about US$41.6 million) in box-office earnings. As of May 2016, the anime film franchise exceeded 60 billion yen (about US$557.6 million) in total box-office earnings.

Eiga Crayon Shin-chan Shūrai! Uchūjin Shiriri (Crayon Shin-chan the Movie: Invasion! Alien Shiriri), the Crayon Shin-chan franchise's 25th anime film, opened at #2 during the April 15-16 weekend.

The live-action Ghost in the Shell film dropped from #3 to #5 in its second weekend. Eiga Doraemon: Nobita no Nankyoku Kachi Kochi Daibōken (Doraemon the Movie 2017: Great Adventure in the Antarctic Kachi Kochi), the 37th anime film in the Doraemon franchise, dropped from #4 to #6 in its seventh weekend.

The live-action film of Yayoiso's ReLIFE manga debuted at #8.

The live-action film of Mika Yamamori's Hirunaka no Ryūsei (Daytime Shooting Star) manga fell from #6 to #10 in its fourth weekend.
