Pokémon the Movie: I Choose You! Film Opens at #1, Live-Action Gintama at #2

Gintama sets 2-day record for Japanese live-action films in Japan in 2017

Pokémon the Movie: I Choose You! (Gekijōban Pocket Monster: Kimi ni Kimeta!), this year's Pokémon film, sold 436,000 tickets to earn 516 million yen (about US$4.61 million) in its first two days and open at #1 at the Japanese box office. The film opened on Saturday on 368 screens. The anime earned 159.3% of the opening weekend total of last year's Pokémon the Movie: Volcanion and the Mechanical Marvel film, which debuted at #3 and earned a total of 2.15 billion yen (US$19.2 million).

The live-action film of Hideaki Sorachi's Gintama manga sold 742,254 tickets to earn 982,291,500 yen (US$8.78 million) in its first four days and rank at #2. The film opened on Friday and earned 176,025,800 yen (US$1.57 million) on 335 screens on its opening day. The film then sold 392,789 tickets on Saturday and Sunday to earn 541,032,900 yen (US$4.83 million). The film had the highest opening two days of any Japanese live-action film in 2017 so far. The film's total box-office earnings are expected to surpass 5 billion yen (US$44.7 million).

Studio Ponoc and Hiromasa Yonebayashi's Mary and The Witch's Flower (Mary to Majo no Hana) anime film fell from #2 to #5 in its second weekend. The film sold 324,000 tickets to earn 428 million yen (about US$3.75 million) on 458 screens in its opening weekend. The anime based on Mary Stewart's The Little Broomstick book earned 113% of the box-office earnings of When Marnie Was There, Yonebayashi's previous film, during its opening weekend. The film will open in 155 countries and territories worldwide.

The No Game, No Life Zero anime film opened on 61 screens on Saturday to rank at #7 at the box office. The film's main cast and staff returned from the 2014 television anime adaptation of Yuu Kamiya's No Game, No Life light novel series.

The live-action film adaptation of Rina Yagami's Ani ni Aisaresugite Komattemasu manga fell from #4 to #8 in its third weekend. The film sold 143,000 tickets to earn 165 million yen (about US$1.46 million) on 251 screens during its opening weekend.

Lionsgate's Power Rangers film opened on Saturday on 282 screens to rank at #9. The film opened in the United States on March 24. The film earned an estimated US$84,234,169 in the United States and a worldwide total of about US$140 million.

The 29th Anpanman anime film, Soreike! Anpanman Buruburu no Takarasagashi Daibōken! (Let's Go! Anpanman: Buruburu's Big Treasure Hunt Adventure!), fell off the top 10 box office charts in its third weekend. The anime sold 80,000 tickets to earn 88 million yen (US$780,000) in its opening weekend. The film introduces an original character based on the hero of Yasashii Raion (Kind Lion), a picture book by the late creator of Anpanman Takashi Yanase.
